Korail Slum Site Analysis

This site analysis video has been created for our Masters of Architecture Computational Design Studio module. The video explores various aspects of Korail - the largest informal settlement in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The analysis aims to understand the patterns and networks that exist in Korail to be able to propose a design project that will enhance the settlement. Analysing the growth of and boundary of the slum we see systems such as salt crystallisation deactivation in penicillin shaping the formation of the settlement. Climate disaster is a large factor in the reason for in-migration to Dhaka, and the typology of the buildings within Korail. Banani Lake surrounds the settlement with water a key element to the structure and arrangement of the slum dwellings, similar to the morphology of plant leaf cells. However, the water is very polluted due to inadequate waste management and during the monsoon season can cause serious damage to the dwellings. We propose the development within Korail should enhance the strong social fabric of the settlement whilst reshaping the residents relationship with the water.
